Challenge
Transform San Juan’s long-dormant Terminal A into a vibrant new home for JetBlue after the airline named the city its sixth “focus city” in 2012. The project involved reviving an existing structure, creating a sense of place that reflected both JetBlue’s brand and the terminal’s architecture, and designing a welcoming and energetic environment that could guide travelers intuitively through the space.
Solution
Drawing inspiration from the terminal’s original architecture, my team and I used the block patterns found in its tilework and windows as graphic containers for bold color. By layering gels in staggered, open arrangements, we created a dynamic stained-glass effect—brightening the interior and exterior while visually propelling travelers toward their destinations. We also introduced a 15-foot JetBlue pylon, the first of its kind, illuminated at night and accented with 12 halo LEDs to honor the year of installation. The result was a revitalized terminal that felt alive, directional, and unmistakably JetBlue.
